Leo Register Obituary

Leo Register, 93, of Lake City, passed away on Sunday morning, March 10, 2024 at his residence, surrounded by his family. Leo was born on March 30, 1930, being raised in northern Columbia County. On January 14, 1946, he joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Albany and was honorably discharged on December 21, 1951. He met the love of his life Josephine (JoAnn) Smith and later married on August 15, 1952. JoAnn preceded him in death on June 20, 2010 after 58 years of marriage.

 

He worked in pulp wood, farming, raising cattle and later worked at Guerdon Industries. On August 20, 1955, he went to work at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lake City, FL., retiring from the position of Pulmonary Function Technician in December of 1985. His passion was raising his cattle and later forming the L&B Deer ranch. He continued to farm and when time permitted, would fish and hunt. He was a longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was the last survivor of 14 siblings.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Register; parents, William Charles and Mary Jane Durrance Register; grandson, Kevin Scott Mimbs; brothers, Johnny, Perry, Bill, Albert, Jessie, W.C.; sisters, Nettie Melton, Kate Clawson, Betty Lovelace, Virginia Robinson, Annie Spradley, Carrie Norris and Inez Singer.

 

He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Skipper) Mimbs, Bonnie (Brian) Hepworth and Darlene (Mike) Barrs; and his son, Bruce (Betty Jo) Register. Nine grandchildren, Brian (Lindsey) Mimbs, Timmy (Kacey) Mimbs, Brad (Tracy) Clyatt, Christopher (Sandy) Carmichael, Caleb (Erikah) Carmichael, Devin Register and Angel Register, Brian (Pam) Barrs and Brad Barrs; Eighteenteen great-grandchildren, Bryson, Levi and Ellie Mimbs, Taryn, Tyson and Taylor Clyatt, Eden and Axel Carmichael, Ellie and Abby Carmichael, Rowdy and Harleigh Register, Tenya and Talaina Glass, C.J. Norcross and Kansas and Kori Schrader, and Bryson Barrs. Two sisters in laws, Evelyn and Margie Register along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

 

The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to the VA Hospital Staff, Vitas, and the WillowBrook Assisted Living Facility for all of their love and care for the last eleven years, we are truly grateful.

 

A funeral service for Mr. Register will be conducted on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at11:00 A.M. in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with Pastor Brian Mimbs officiating, assisted by Pastor Caleb Carmichael and Pastor Keith Norris. Interment will follow in the Register Family Cemetery located off of 441 North. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M.  prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations please be considered to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (care of Skipper Mimbs, 249 SE Mohawk Way, Lake City, FL, 32025).
