John E. Simkanich, 98, of Lake City, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in the Piedmont-Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, GA after a brief illness. He was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1924 to the late John Simkanich and Mary Haluska Simkanich. He has made Lake City his home since 1994, moving here from the St. Petersburg/Pinellas County area. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving during World War II and worked for 30 years as a Machinist in the Steel Mill Industry as well as worked for 15 years with the Pinellas County School System. He along with his late wife were members of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Lake City; and he enjoyed playing the guitar, singing at the Senior Centers, woodworking, playing golf and also a good card game. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 74 years, “Margie” Marie Simkanich.
He is survived by his children, John Simkanich, Jr. (Sue), Tom Simkanich (Gabi), Lorraine Simkanich, Daniel Simkanich (Laura), Rosemary Moon (Steve) and Ronald Simkanich (Carmen). Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.
A funeral mass for Mr. Simkanich will be conducted on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. in the Epiphany Catholic Church with Father Bob Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service at the church.
