James Fillyaw Obituary

On March 23,2021 James (Jim) Fillyaw passed away after a short illness.  Jim was born in Luraville Florida on December 4, 1932 to Van Estan and Lola Fillyaw.  He was one of 13 children. 

Jim served in the United States Marine Corp serving in Korea and earning the purple heart.  After returning home he moved to Tampa where he met his first wife, Joyce. They were married for 35 years and raised 2 children.   He lost his wife Joyce in 1991. Shortly thereafter, he moved back to his birthplace and settled in Mayo on the Suwannee River.  It was the place he enjoyed more than anywhere else. 

He met his second love Carol a few years later and they were married in 1995.  Jim was a friend to everyone.  He loved fishing and his boat was always gassed up and ready to go.  He was a talented woodworker and was often asked to build projects for friends and family. 

Jim is survived by his wife Carol.   Between the two of them he is survived by sons Clayton and his wife Maria, Jeff Herrington and Josh Herrington.   Daughters Kim Lawson of and her husband Tom and Julie Smeltz.  There are 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Jim is also survived by six sisters, Zell Tucker, Helen Lee, Lana Sapp, Ida Hewitt and Jackie Briscoe.

A memorial service is planned for 4:00 PM,  April 24th at his home.  Family and friends are invited.
