Fred P. “Popow” Elkins, 88 of Lake City, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2019, at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. He was born in Oak Creek, Colorado to the late Fred Elkins and Ada Rose Elkins. Mr. Elkins had made his home in Lake City since 1991 having moved here from Syracuse, New York. He worked for many years with United McGill Corporation in the sheet metal industry in both the Westerville, Ohio and Hillsboro, Texas facilities. Mr. Elkins, along with his wife Helen, also worked as a distributor with School Book Fairs, distributing books to various schools. He loved riding his mower, rebuilding older cars with his son and spending time with his family. Mr. Elkins was preceded in death by two sisters, Carey Minton and Sarah “Sue” Gingise.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Helen J. Elkins, Lake City; two sons, F. Scott Elkins (Patsy), Lake City and Charles R. “Chuck” Elkins (Joyce), Nashville, TN; one brother, Bill Elkins (Wanda), Ocala, FL; six grandchildren, Melissa Davis (John Robert), Teresa Thrasher (John) and Amanda Farnell (Jonathan) all of Lake City, Matthew Elkins (Amy), Nashville, TN, Bryan Elkins (Sara), Houston, TX and Rebecca Ann Elkins, Nashville, TN; thirteen great-grandchildren, Sarah, Branden, Jackson, Alyson, Lily, Lola, Mason, Marshall, Maybelle, Ellie, Ruby, Margaret and Madilyn; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service honoring the life of Mr. Elkins will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019 at 1:30 PM in the First Baptist Church of Lake City fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
