Alan Smith, also known as Keith Conway, age 68, passed away on May 29, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. Alan is preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Mae Slater Smith, father, James Roy Smith, and brother Les LeRoy Smith. He is survived by his wife of three years, Christie Smith, sister Carla Smith Beyke, daughter Sarah (David) Smith-Ripple, and grandchildren Charlie and Kierstyn Ripple, son, Christopher Smith, bonus step-daughters: Maggie Cope, Catherine (Adam) Vansanford, and Shelby (Josiel) Campis with bonus grandchildren Carolynn and Richard Campis.
Alan was born December 25, 1953 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Alan moved to Gainesville, Fl in 1978 to pursue his career in radio as a DJ. He was known as Keith Conway for his on air personality. He has worked for many stations in the surrounding areas, including Bee 94.3, Power Country 102, and most recently at WCJX 106.5.
When not on air, Alan was best known as “Charlie and Kierstyn’s Papa,” or “Sarah’s (Mrs. Ripple’s) dad.” He loved spending time with his grandchildren and daughter, and could be found at their soccer, basketball,and football games, archery tournaments, or doing activities with them from fall festivals at their school to kid’s building workshops at HomeDepot.
Through his battle with cancer, Alan remained upbeat, laidback, and retained his sense of humor. He will be forever loved and missed. Social hour for receiving friends and light refreshments will be June 10th, 3-4PM, followed by a celebration of life for Alan. Services will be held at Gateway-Forest Lawn. Flowers may be sent to Gateway-Forest Lawn, or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven Hospice or to his daughter’s archery team: Eastside Elementary Bowbenders.
