Peter W. "Pete" Giebeig, Sr., 74 of Lake City, born February 14, 1951, passed away peacefully at his home after a brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. A lifelong resident of Columbia County, he was the son of the late Van and Lucille Carter Giebeig. He attended Columbia High School and was one of the leaders on the 1967 Columbia High School Football team that won the county's only state title in football. Upon graduation, he was the recipient of a football scholarship to the University of Florida. He remained a fan of the Gators throughout his life. He was a successful farmer, cattleman and real estate developer. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time on the Suwannee River and St. Augustine Beach as well as attending as many of his grandchildren's sporting events as possible.
He is survived by his partner and special caregiver, Elaine Tolar as well as his four children; Dr. Peter (Holly) Giebeig, Jr., Trent (Heather) Giebeig, Lori (Matthew) Simpson and Erin (Stephen) Bailey and eleven grandchildren, Kyrsten Giebeig and Coyle Giebeig, Story Giebeig, Lucy Giebeig, Katy Lyn Giebeig and Avery Giebeig, Joshua Simpson and Sarah Simpson, and Savannah Bailey, Madison Bailey and Dallas Bailey. He is also survived by his two sisters, Gloria Spivey and Lucinda (Craig) Thomas; a niece, Shane Spivey (Brandon) Beadles and one great-niece, Laura Van Beadles.
Funeral services for Mr. Giebeig will be conducted on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with Dr. Billy Young officiating. A private interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery. A time of visitation with the family will be Friday evening, July 18, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Haven Hospice or the charity of your choice.
