Mrs. Norvelle Alderman, age 93, a long-time resident of Lake City, Florida, passed away January 15, 2026. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 10:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Lake City, Florida.
Born in 1932 in southern Georgia, in Ludowici, Norvelle was the daughter of the late Philip and Merita Long. She graduated from high school in Athens, Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia. She was an avid Gator fan, except when they played the University of Georgia. She was married to George Alderman in 1951.
Norvelle served as a substitute teacher at Columbia High School in Lake City for 20 years. She was Volunteer of the Year for the Literacy Program and was loved by the students with whom she worked.
Norvelle had a very strong faith, always believing in miracles. She was a longstanding member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for the entirety of her membership. Norvelle served on many church committees and was a member of United Methodist Women. She traveled with her church on various mission trips to Haiti. She volunteered with the Christian Service Center in downtown Lake City.
She was a dedicated daily walker her entire life, enjoyed square dancing, and loved being out in nature. She also loved to paint, and many of the pictures she painted included birds and flowers. Norvelle enjoyed golfing and was also a camping enthusiast. She provided her children with many opportunities to fall in love with nature as well. She and her husband George bought a place in the Smoky Mountains so that the children would have a vacation spot to appreciate the great outdoors.
Norvelle is survived by her brother, Jack Long (Yvonne); two daughters and her son: Pamela Sawyer (Henry) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Phyllis Hawkins (Drew) of Winter Springs, Florida, and Joseph Alderman (Mary) of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren: Andrew, T.J., Lindsay, Jay, Sarah, Zachary, and Becca; and her great-grandchildren: Abby, Scout, Bennett, Cohen, Levi, and Ava.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband George Edward Alderman, and one sister, Margery Long.
