Nancy S. Hunter, 88, of Lake City, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, August 3, 2024 at the Solaris Healthcare of Lake City, after an extended illness. She was a life-long resident of Lake City, born on April 26, 1936 to the late Charles H. Hunter and Ada I. Owens Hunter. She was the Valedictorian of the Columbia High School graduating class of 1954; and furthered her education at Young Harris College in Young Harris, GA in 1956, Florida Southern in Lakeland, FL in 1958; and finally earning her Master's degree from Mississippi State in 1979. She worked for over 38 years as a teacher with the Columbia County School District, from which she retired from in 1997. She grew up going to the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church as well as the Bethel Methodist Church; and was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church in Lake City, where she was very active, serving on numerous committees as well as teaching Sunday School Classes. In her spare time, she enjoyed being a spectator of all kinds of sports, especially football, following the FSU Seminoles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and of course the Columbia High Tigers. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and socializing with her family and friends. Nancy loved keeping up with her former students, she took pride in her career as an educator and would always follow her past student's accomplishments and their careers.
She is survived by her nephew, Michael S. Hunter (Brenda) of Lake City; nieces, Michelle Hunter Layle of Lake City, Kara Hunter Berger (Jason) of Jacksonville, Erin Barrs Sapp (Dallas) and Kali Hunter McFatter (Levi) both of Lake City; and her great nieces and nephews Peyton, Masina, Sterling, Laula'au, River, Wilder, Hunter, and Cruz. She is also survived by the numerous students that she taught over the years in the Columbia County School System as well.
A funeral service for Ms. Hunter will be conducted on Friday, August 9, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. in the First Methodist Church of Lake City with Pastor Aaron Ankey officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations please be considered to the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
