Samuel Sweat
November 29, 1943 – September 13, 2024
Melvin "Sam" Sweat, 80, of Lake City passed away at his home on Friday, September 13. Born in Lake City, Florida, Sam was the son of William F. "Bill" and Sadie Scarborough Sweat. He was a graduate of Columbia High School class of 1963 and was of the Presbyterian faith. He served in the US National Guard. He retired from the Florida Department of Transportation after 33 years. Sam enjoyed golf and hunting and was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club. He could often be found watching old westerns, shooting pool, or playing cards with friends. Family was very important to him, and he made sure they knew it.
Sam never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone. He had the gift of gab and could ramble on for hours about anything. After retirement he spent many years serving at the local Moose Lodge as a distinguished fellow where he held many titles such as Treasurer, Historical Officer, Trustee and Junior Governor.
He loved animals and was preceded in death by his beloved Ryder, Heidi, and Pepper, just to name a few.
Mr Sweat was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Barbara, 2 daughters Amy and Brandie, 2 sisters Sylvia and Sonya, and his parents. He is survived by 1 son Gary Sweat (Toni), 1 daughter Ashley Martin (Artie), 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren 1 sister Sharon Greene, 1 brother Julian "Ray" Sweat, and a host of nieces, nephews and other friends and family.
Per Mr. Sweat's wishes, there will be a private graveside service at a later date.
The family will be honoring his life on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Lake City Moose Lodge.
