IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James "Greg"
Lastinger
February 14, 1957 – October 1, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of James Gregory "Greg" Lastinger, 67, of Lake City, Florida. Greg was born in Miami, Florida to Lavon "Jim" Lastinger and Sandra Lee (Cazel) Lastinger, and spent his early years in Hollywood, FL, before making Lake City his home in 1979. Greg was a man of many talents and passions. A master carpenter by trade, he traveled across the country, leaving his mark on numerous projects—from hotels to military bases, local schools to restaurants. His skilled hands built more than just structures; they built a legacy of craftsmanship, hard work, and dedication that will stand the test of time. Beyond his work, Greg's true joys were found in the quiet moments spent fishing by the water or tending to his garden, where he nurtured life and beauty with the same care he extended to those around him. He was a man of the earth, someone who found peace in the simple, meaningful rhythms of life.
Greg is survived by his loving family, including his two cherished daughters, Carrie Lastinger (Bryan) of Lake City, FL and Theresa Westberry (Robbie) of Valdosta, GA, along with two beloved bonus daughters, Melinda Ortiz (Hector) of Hahira, GA and Melissa Bell of Hahira, GA. He was a proud grandfather to Leona Edmonds, Hannah Edmonds, Abigail Brooks, Maci Westberry, Anneliyse Ortiz, Jillian Ortiz, Brianna Bell, Nathan Walmsley, Michael Edmonds, Tristan Ortiz, and Keelan Bell. He is also survived by his dear sister, Cindy Clayton (Buddy) of Lake City, FL, nephew Kyle Jones (Della), niece Crista Lastinger and former wife and friend Joyce Burnsed. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Sandra Lee Cazel and Lavon James Lastinger, his brothers Kirt, Peter, and Robert Lastinger, and his nephew, Eric Lastinger.
Though his passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, Greg's spirit will continue to live on in the lives he touched. His legacy is not only in the structures he built but in the love, kindness he has shown to family and friends. An intimate family gathering will be held at a later date.
