James “Jim” Clarence Severson passed away on October 1, 2026, at Riverwood Lodge. He was born on September 16, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Jim built a life marked by skill, personality, and a genuine gift for connecting with people. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was a barber, he became a hairstylist and eventually purchased the business from him. Over the years, he earned several awards and gave demonstrations at seminars, reflecting both his talent and his standing in his profession. For sixty years he especially enjoyed the daily rhythm of his work and the conversations it brought; many of his customers and clients became lasting friends.

He also served his country with pride in the United States Army for three years as a Track Vehicle Mechanic, attaining the rank of Specialist 4. Among his fondest memories from those years were driving officers around and sharing practical jokes with his comrades, moments that spoke to his sense of humor and the warmth he brought to those around him.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed playing golf and playing the accordion in a polka band. In later years, he found pleasure in playing cards and bingo at his assisted living facility, continuing to enjoy companionship and the simple happiness of time shared with others.

One of Jim’s proudest accomplishments was achieving and maintaining sobriety for 39 years. He gave generously of that hard-won experience, helping others through many years of service as an AA sponsor. He often said he could tell when someone was truly serious and when someone was only playing games, and he used that clarity with honesty and compassion to encourage those seeking a better path.

Jim is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, John Severson, Thomas "Tom" and Reah Severson and Timothy “Tim” and Kay Severson; by his grandchildren, Dustin Severson, Jessica Severson, and Janelle Severson; and by six great-grandchildren, who carry his family forward.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Severson; his mother, Evelyn “Peggy” Olsen Severson; and his sisters, Jackie Neals and Judy Nitkowski.
