Hermon Lee Brinkley, Sr., 87, of Lake City, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026 after an extended illness. He was born in Homerville, GA on November 4, 1938 to the late Hermon Cicero Brinkley and Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Smith. He has made Lake City his home most all of his life and worked for the FDOT for over 30 years before retiring. After retirement, he went into the swimming pool construction business for a number of years before he completely retired in 2017. He was a member of the White Springs Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints; and in his spare time, enjoyed dirt track racing, hunting, especially turkey hunting and fishing. He is preceded in death by his son, Michael “B.” Brinkley; and his siblings, Roy Gay Brinkley, James Phillip Brinkley, Gloria “Bodie” Smith, Ted Smith, JD Smith and Dorma Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Betty Register Haltiwanger Brinkley of Lake City; sons, Lee Brinkley (Cindy) of Lake City and James Waldron (Cindy) of Wellborn. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren also survive.
A graveside funeral service for Mr. Brinkley will be conducted on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 1007 NE Needmoore Road, White Springs, FL, 32096. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction and care of GATEWAY-FOREST LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 3596 S. US HWY 441, Lake City, FL, 32025, 386-752-1954.
