In Loving Memory of George Tuning July 23, 1938 – October 26, 2025

George Tuning, 87, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at Haven – Suwannee Valley Hospice, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Baxter, West Virginia, George lived a life of purpose, service, and quiet strength. In 1956, he proudly joined the U.S. Navy, where he completed Field Medical Service School in 1958, Audiometric School, and Advanced Hospital Corpsman School in 1967. His dedication to medicine and his country led him to earn a Master of Arts degree and continue his military journey with the U.S. Coast Guard. George retired as a Commanding Officer from the Coast Guard Training Center, where he had the honor of training future physician assistants—sharing not only his skills but his compassion for helping others.

After his military service, George continued to serve those who served by working as a Physician Assistant at the Lake City Veterans Hospital, retiring once more in 2000. His career reflected his lifelong commitment to care, discipline, and excellence.

Beyond his accomplishments, George was a man who truly loved life. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing pool, spending time at church, and never turned down a good meal shared in good company. His easygoing spirit, kindness, and steady presence brought comfort and laughter to everyone who knew him.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 and a half years, Sharon Tuning; his parents, Mary Josephine Dean and Edward Harry Tuning; and his brother, James Edward Tuning.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda-Oliver Tuning; his sisters, Linda Heffner and Betty Jo Kirby; and many nieces and nephews, including Charles Tuning, April Mattox, David Tuning, Richard Heffner, James Jr. Kirby, George Kirby, Robert Kirby, Bob Kirby, and James Sr. Kirby. He is also lovingly remembered by his stepson, Max Slate; grandson, Thor Slate (and family); and granddaughter, Casey Slate (and family).

George's life was a testament to service, love, and faith. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
