George A. Dorvick, 87, of Wellborn, Florida, passed away on October 25, 2026, in Lake City, Florida, after living with dementia and a brief battle with cancer. A man of faith, music, and a lifelong love of the sea, George will be remembered for his cheerful spirit and the happiness he found in life’s simple pleasures.

Born on May 4, 1939, in Manhattan, New York, George attended St. Anne’s Catholic School in Manhattan, where his faith in the Lord developed. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in literature from Hunter College.

After college, George joined the Navy and worked as a secretary in the admiral’s office. He spoke fondly of his time aboard the USS Springfield in the Mediterranean during the Vietnam War. He also served as the ship’s DJ, sharing music with his fellow sailors—a fitting role for someone who found so much joy in music.

George devoted many years to education, teaching students of different ages in New York City, Key West, and Broward County, Florida. He particularly enjoyed teaching special education classes.

Outside the classroom, George enjoyed dancing, singing karaoke, and listening to his favorite 1950s songs, old country music, and Irish melodies. An only child, George loved being the center of attention, especially when there was a microphone or a dance floor nearby.

He loved the ocean, deep-sea fishing, traveling, and taking cruises. While living in New York, he owned a boat and enjoyed spending time on the water. George also loved a good meal and could happily spend hours at a buffet. Even in his final days, his face lit up at the mention of a bowl of ice cream.

He is survived by his wife, Merribeth Dorvick; his daughters, Donna Dorvick and Amy Dorvick; his son, Chris Dorvick; and his former wife, Laura Dorvick. He was preceded in death by his father, George P. Dorvick, and his mother, Adeline Mary Dorvick.

George will be lovingly remembered for his fun-loving nature and the cheer he brought to those around him. In a familiar melody, a day beside the water, or a story shared with a smile, his memory will live on.
