Obituary

Dorothy Sue Pitman, 94, passed on to glory on Saturday, September 28, 2024 after a long battle with dementia.  She will be greatly missed by all who loved her but there is joy in knowing that she is absent from the body but present with the Lord.

Dorothy Sue was born in Lake City, Florida on April 3, 1930 to William and Francis (Sugar) Barrett.  She attended public school in Lake City and was an honor student and active in many school clubs.  It was there that she developed lifelong friendships that were always dear to her.  On December 11, 1954 she married the love of her life, Jim Pitman, and they shared 52 years of wonderful life together.  Dorothy Sue was a beautiful, humble lady, who lived out her strong faith with a life of grace and sacrificial service to others.  Her passion was her family and she was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.  She was the strong matriarch of the Pitman family and provided a loving, Christian environment for her family and all those that visited her home.  She was a wonderful cook and took great pleasure in seeing her family and many family friends around her dinner table.  For many years she prepared large lunches for her children and their friends which led to the affectionate nickname of "Dot's Diner".  Dorothy Sue was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and was very involved there until her health prevented it.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Francis Barrett, her husband, Jim Pitman and her sister, Betty Curtis.  She is survived by her children: Laura Moody (Alan), James Pitman, Jr (Jennifer) and Bill Pitman (Cindy); 10 grandchildren: Matt Johnson, Adrea Harris, Michelle Lambert, Brian Pitman, Kyle Pitman, Kevin Pitman, Lucas Bedenbaugh, Logan Bedenbaugh, Cyrus Morton and Emma Pitman; 7 great grandchildren: Blanton Pitman, Remington Pitman, Olivia Pitman, Alex Harris, Clara Harris, Cameron Harris and Rozzi Johnson; six very special nieces and nephews: RaDonna Tyler, Renee Doles, Susan Rimel, Jim McMurtry, Mary Williams and Tom McMurtry.

Visitation will take place at the First Methodist Church in Lake City on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00, with the funeral following thereafter.  A private graveside service will be held at Memorial Cemetery for the family.

Donations in memory of Mrs. Pitman can be made to the Lake City Christian Service Center or the First Methodist Church Backpack Ministry.
