Retired Battalion Chief Johnny Givens of Lake City, formerly of Dothan, Alabama, passed away August 29, 2018. He was the son of the late Benjamin Huston Givens and Mitsuye Givens. He grandparents were the Rev. B.C. and Alcie Givens.
Johnny retired after 28 years of service with the Dothan Fire Department where he was part of the Dive Rescue, High Angle Rescue, and Trench Rescue. He was a Paramedic and rose through the ranks to become an Operations Chief. He worked with Southeast Alabama EMS and helped provide education to Emergency Medical Services in Houston County as well as surrounding counties.
He loved Jesus, being saved at an early age and baptized by his grandfather in Round Lake. He enjoyed fishing, camping out and being with friends and family. Upon his retirement, he moved to Lake City, Florida. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church and he considered his church friends part of his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; son, Jalen Keith Givens, daughters; Ashley Elizabeth and Jennifer Suzanne; brother, Stanley Givens; sister, Priscilla Givens; mother, Mitsuye Givens; aunt, Luna Dunaway; brother-in-law, Steve Davis, many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Retired Battalion Chief Givens will be conducted on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. in the Gateway Baptist Church with his cousin, Reverend Cliff Knight, Pastor Steve Thompson and Pastor Jon Kent officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. (one hour prior to the services) at the church. Flowers will be accepted, but donations may be made to the Gateway Baptist Church Building Fund.
