Hugh Franklin Chasteen, Jr., 94 of Lake City, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at the Solaris HealthCare of Lake City. He was born in Waycross, Georgia on November 8, 1923 to the late Hugh Franklin Chasteen, Sr. and Gail Sealy Crandall Chasteen. Mr. Chasteen moved to Lake City at an early age and graduated from Columbia High class of 1942. He enlisted in the US Army on November 9, 1942 and married his wife, Kathryn King, on March 12, 1943. Mr. Chasteen was a Veteran of WWII and served with the signal air warning battalion in the Philippines.
After leaving the military, Hugh returned to his wife and child in Lake City. He worked at Dubose and Cox, and then opened his own business, Chasteen’s TV and Appliance Repair. Mr. Chasteen was one of the first who installed air conditioners in new cars. Later in 1967, Hugh began teaching at Columbia High School teaching an electronics class, a new program giving students skills to be able to work after graduation. He retired from teaching in 1986.
During summers and after retirement, He traveled the western states visiting his children and grandchildren in Idaho and Washington State. He and Kitty took their RV all the way to Alaska. He enjoyed salmon fishing in Alaska with his brothers.
Mr. Chasteen was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Kathryn King Chasteen, in 2011; two brothers, Clarence David Chasteen and Charles Robert Chasteen; and one sister, Vera Edith Chasteen Fowler.
Survivors include his four children, Linda Gail Chasteen Younger (Larry), Bonanza, OR, Peggy Marie Chasteen Anderson (Rual), Melba, ID, Alan Lee Chasteen (Suzanne), Florence, AL and Donald Hugh Chasteen (Jintana), Kanchanaburi, Thailand; two brothers, John McNulty Chasteen (Glenda Faye), Lakeland and Fredrick Wesley Chasteen (Susan), Palm Bay; two sisters, Kathryn Ann Chasteen Steele, Jacksonville Beach and Nancy Ruth Chasteen Moore (George), Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, Laurie Evans, Jeffery Younger, Larry James Younger, Bruce Younger, Eric Younger, Andrew Anderson, Thomas Anderson, Carolyn Hassan and Christopher Chasteen: 20 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with Pastor Lee Brookins officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service from 12:00 Noon to 1:45 PM.
