Donnie Free Obituary

Donnie Edward Free of Lake City, FL, 69, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018. Donnie was born on November 29, 1948 in Decatur, Alabama to the late James Edward Free (Father), Hilda B. Free (Mother) of Decatur, AL.

Donnie is survived by his fiancé and soul mate, Barbara Scott of St. Johns, FL, three children, Ashley Free, Westley Free, and Madeline Free. Four brothers, James R. Free (Tere), Gary K. Free (Jeannie), Randy Free, Anthony Free (Crystal) and one sister Brenda K. Lacy (Chris) all of Lake City, FL. Many very good friends he called “brothers” but one special brother, Danny Thomas who will always be thought of as a “Free”. Many special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews survived him.

Donnie, grew up in Lake City, was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 67. After graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he did tours in New Jersey, Germany and Vietnam. The Army is where Donnie became interested in the communications field and became a part of the Military Affiliate Radio Service (M.A.R.S.) Company and once discharged came back to Lake City and grew his own business “Free’s Communication”. Donnie was on the forefront of technology growing a cable TV business, then his brother Jimmie joined him a short time later for a business partnership. Donnie enjoyed water skiing, playing softball, fishing, traveling and family but, most of all his “Jimmy Buffet” concerts and decorating for the tailgating.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at 4:00 PM in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with Carl Sandlin officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service from 3-4:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be conducted on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.
