It’s been too many years gone by since I met David, Shelly and Chris. We met at fire station 46 when Chris joined as a volunteer fireman. What a special boy that turned into a fine young man. I truly grieve with you Chris and Shelly. The strength you both shown throughout David’s life shines as an example.

David was such a bright spot in my life. And now that he is in heaven, well I feel an emptiness that aches. No matter how many times I asked, David would do just about anything for me. From trying out new therapies to taking walks around Shands, he was dependable. He always knew that I was going to be running late in my treatment schedule and would tell me to save him for last on the nights mom wasn't there.... so that we could play video games or walk down to Subway.. maybe catch a movie.
And, for some reason, the mom role stuck. He would tease me that I had 'big shoes to fill' because mom is, 'You know, kind of all over the place ' and worried about everyone. I always told him that that's what mom's do... it's how we earn the big bucks. He would tilt his head, roll his eyes, and chuckle.
That's how I will always see David. That tilt of the head, a quick eye roll, smile, and chuckle.
David could keep up with the best of them. He had the gift of knowing exactly what to say, and how to say it, to bring the other person to question what they had said or done. I love that about him. That quick, dry wit.... along with the head tilt and I was gone. Giggling like I was a peer, not an adult..certainly not a medical professional.
Our last actual conversation was in April. And that's how we rolled... every now and again he'd pop in to say hi and "check in" on me. And I'd do the same. He'd always end our conversations the same way.... I'd say:"Well, I've kept you looking enough... go be a kid" and, without fail he'd say" 'k, love you, mom #2".....
So, my dear, sweet David.... you know you'll live in my heart for as long as I walk this Earth. I love you. I just bet you're looking for the next Pokémon raid, up there, with all those waiting on you to arrive. I've kept you long enough.... go on, breathe easy, I'll be seeing you again one day.
