Burl Jenkins, 77, of Lake City, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 21, 2018 at the North Florida Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born to the late Carlton Elias and Jane Langford Jenkins in White Springs on March 12, 1941. He grew up and attended school here in Lake City, before joining the Navy after high school and living between California and Lake City during that time. After his service, he came back to Florida and began his teaching career. He started teaching history in Ocala, then came back to Lake City; where he was an ESE teacher at Melrose Park Elementary School until his retirement in 2010. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his tractor, watching sports and spending time with his three precious grandsons. He was also a member of the New Horizon Church of Christ in Lake City. He is preceded in death by his brothers; Junior, Albert and Colon Jenkins; and sisters; Martha Terry and Faith Fuller.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years; Bonnie Jenkins of Lake City; daughter; Marty Jenkins Church (Tommy) of Lake City; grandsons; Sam, Grady and Trevor Church of Lake City; brothers; Edward “Tramel” Jenkins (Mary) of Alabama; Randy Jenkins (Fran) of Orlando and T.D. Jenkins (Shirley) of Lake City. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends also survive.
Memorial services for Mr. Jenkins will be conducted on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 (one hour prior to the services) at the funeral home. A private family interment will be conducted in the family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered to the New Horizon Church of Christ.
